2010 TOP 10…or so

Posted in Music, Uncategorized by Impresario on November 23, 2010

Here’s my best albums of the year. I know the year’s not over. But I’ve heard what I need to hear haha

(this list is in no particular order because I can’t choose)

1. Curren$y – Pilot Talk

Spitta is one of my favorite rappers, and Pilot Talk certainly reinforced that position. The jazzy/slow smokers vibes on this CD are incredible. Personal favorites are Breakfast, Roasted and The Day. Lots of cameos from heavy hitters; Mos Def, Jay Electronica, Nesby Phips, and Snoop Dogg. Front to back a record I’ve enjoyed since it’s release, and will continue to enjoy as the time passes. 5/5

2. Curren$y – Pilot Talk 2

I haven’t even listened to the whole record and I’m in love. Just as stated above. Spitta kills it. His lyrics, word play and beats are just soothing to the soul. Roll something up, and then double it, then square that and you should be straight for this hip hop odyssey. 5/5

3. Kanye West – My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy

Kanye KILLS it with this one. After 808s I was expecting a completely new direction from Kanye, but oh boy was I wrong. Stand outs on the album are All of the Lights, Monster, and Sinsation. Lots of cameos on this record; too many to list actually haha. But man this is a HUGE album and totally met destroyed expectations. A must-have in the record bag. 5/5

4. Gorillaz – Plastic Beach

My fascination with this CD is hard to explain. I first heard it studying for finals last semester and listened to it straight through about 4 times after that. 2 trips with this CD as my guide and man I don’t know how to put it. I just love it front to back. Plays smoothly and seamlessly, just incredible. Stand outs are Welcome To the World of the Plastic Beach ft. Snoop Dogg, Stylo, Melancholy Hill, Some Kind of Nature, Empire Ants, Plastic Jet…well you guys are beginning to get the idea. 5/5

5. Gucci Mane – The Appeal: Georgia’s Most Wanted

Released on the same day as Lil Wayne’s (abysmal) I Am Not A Human Being, Gucci stole the spotlight with this one. I’m a huge Gucci fan, and this record was exactly what I was expecting: Trap as fuck. Stand outs are Gucci Time, Party Animal and Trap Talk. He even sampled Justice with the help of Swizz Beats and killllls it. 5/5

6. Chilly Gonzales – Ivory Tower

Piano prodigy and world-record holder Chilly Gonzales’ major release of 2010. Accompanied with a full-length film about a chess game vendetta featuring Tiga, Ivory Tower is a beautiful combination of jazzy and passionate piano with hard hitting electronic riffs and synth beauty galore. Stand outs are I Am Europe and Knight Moves. Great studying music for all my academic-heads out there. 5/5

7. Brodinski – Best of Everything

Yes, ok. So I know this is a mixtape. And I know you all understand my bias toward Brodinski, but the Best of Everything, two mixes (Hip Hop Side A [crazy!!], and Electronic Side B) are very well put together and mixed in true hip-hop mixtape dj fashion.  Once you get started you can’t turn it off. I enjoyed the hip hop side much more, no reason, just I love Brodinski’s flexibility and showing why he is truly a force to be reckoned with. Best of Everything 2 should be coming out shortly so keep it locked cos you KNOW the Dojo’s gonna be all over it. 5/5

8. Uffie – Sex, Dreams, and Denim Jeans

Oh Uffie. Bred in Miami and nurtured by Feadz and the Ed Rec crew, Uffie’s Sex, Dreams, and Denim Jeans makes a statement that she’s on the map and she’s not going anywhere. Standouts are MC’s Can Kiss (a shot at M.I.A.), Pop The Glock, ADD SUV (and the Carte Blanche remix!), Ricky, Our Song, and Hong Kong Garden (great party song). I love Uffie and its ALWAYS a pleasure whenever new releases on Ed Banger come out. This was easily the summer anthem (next to Lazerproof). 5/5. MARRY ME PLEASE UFFIE!

9. Crystal Castles – Crystal Castles II

Highly experimental, and totally mind blowing, Crystal Castle’s second release album is hard to wrap you head around at first. But after a few listens you pick up on the cryptically frightening melodys that are oddly harmonious. Great record, favorites are Celestica and Baptism. I wish I could’ve seen them live but I missed the opportunity by like 3 days. So I’ll keep that in mind for the future. ROCK ON

10. Daft Punk – Tron: Legacy Soundtrack

Ok, again this hasn’t even been released yet, but it’s DAFT FUCKING PUNK HOW ON EARTH COULD IT SUCK??? so now that that’s settled, Derezzed has been released and it took a blow torch to my face and melted it right off. I can not wait, as the same with every other Daft head, especially since this is their first studio material since Human After All in 2005. When I see the movie I may ejaculate. And then ejaculate again later when I listen to the 22-song sound track produced EXCLUSIVELY by everyone’s favorite robots. 6/5* * – (anticipated)
